| Commentary | I'm sometimes asked for recommendations on a suitable beginner-level computer networking book. Many books exist dedicated to home networking, specific network technologies like wireless or TCP/IP, or various academic networking topics. The more generic texts often aim too far above the technical level of some readers yet too far below many others.
One interesting book I suggest you consider is Computer Networking First-Step from Cisco Press. Author Wendell Odom does well to strike a good balance, explaining the essentials of the subject to people coming from diverse backgrounds.
